Cape Evans and the Ice Cave

This is a link to a web album I made for the students in California who sent me the Flat Stanley. I've got a few more photos from inside the ice cave that I'll post on here soon.

Halloween 2008

Alright. I admit it. I'm waaaaay behind on this blog.

I would just like to give a very big thank you to all those friends and family who have emailed in the last week or so. Grandpa Lloyd is in a much better place. And like Mom says, he's probably having coffee (and a treat, if I know Grandpa) with Grandma Inez. hahaha

Here's a photo from Halloween. Hard to believe that was almost two months ago. This season is just flying by! My friend Heather (in purple) was going to go as an octopus. Then I had this genius idea to go as the Crary Touch Tank. There's an aerial photo of the touch tank in a few posts back about Flat Stanley. There is a small tank of sea creatures here in the lab, and people are allowed to touch them. We created these costumes in less than three days and won "Best Antarctican" category. Justin (in yellow) and I were dressed as two different types of nudibranchs. Bamma (in pink) went as a pteropod. Ron (in red) went as a pycnogonid, and Heather was of course an octopus. We took a few liberties with our costumes... like how pteropods don't have hair or do they actually exist in the Touch Tank. Pycnogonids also do not have hair, nor do they wear capes. Justin's nudibranch costume also sported a wig as did Heather's octopus. The wigs just matched the costumes so well. Note: there are no octopi in the Touch Tank either. I turned around at one point when I felt someone rubbing my foam spikes and found the divers, Rob and Steve, admiring our costumes. They told me they'd even put a pteropod in the tank the next week just for us!

Ain't That the Truth

I browse the I drive every week looking to see who has put up photos to share with the community or what someone happens to be trying to sell that particular week. It's also good to check the I drive once in awhile to make sure there are no incriminating photos from the weekend. :) This season, one of the creative kitchen staff must've stolen a warning label placed on a food item being served in the Galley to take pictures at the McMurdo sign. I must say, I do agree!

Finally Made It To Castle Rock

I told Andrew last season that I hadn't walked out to Castle Rock ever before because I needed there to be something for me to return to McMurdo to do. Whenever I go somewhere, I never try to see and do everything the place has to offer. What would I do if I went back again? I also hadn't hiked out to Castle Rock because it was a minimum three hours walk round-trip. Andrew came back this season and was in McMurdo on his way to spend the season at WAIS Divide camp. While he was here, we walked out to Castle Rock on a Thursday night after work. We took our time and took lots of goofy photos and ended up back in town four hours after we had left. It was a great walk and nice to catch up with Andrew before he headed out in the field. And now I just have a visit to the South Pole on my list of things I haven't done yet.
